| Herbert Fandel sending off Christian Poulsen! |
As expected UEFA decided to offer Sweden the 3-0 victory against Denmark, for the already famous referee attack issue. Just to remember the June the 2nd match between Denmark and Sweden was interrupted because of a fan who entered the pitch and struck referee Herbert Fandel. There was just one more minute to play for and Sweden had been awarded a penalty. Christian Poulsen punched Sweden’s striker Markus Rosenberg in the stomach and he has been sent off by referee Fandel. This provoked a hysteric reaction from a drunk danish fan which reacted and assaulted the referee.
The Sanction
UEFA has taken a clear decision and ruled the match to a 3-0 Sweden win. Also the Danish Football Association (DBU) was fined with 61,000 euros and prohibited to play the next four home qualifying matches for Euro 2008 at a range lower then 250 kilometres from Copenhagen.
This means that Denmark will play against Liechtenstein, Spain, Latvia and Iceland away from the Parken Stadium. Also the first game against Liechtenstein will be played with closed doors, meaning that no attendance will be allowed.
This sanction was taken by UEFA’s disciplinary committee and was issued after studying their delegate’s report and after interviewing Herber Fandel.
Christian Poulsen’s punishment
For the red card awarded Poulsen received a three match ban bonus after hitting an opponent in the stomach. He didn’t play against Latvia for Denmark’s 2-0 win so he has two more games suspension.
In conclusion
Poulsen’s red-card started a chain reaction and the fan’s attack on the referee could have a decisive bad effect for Denmark. They have big disadvantage left for the remaining Euro 2008 qualifying campaign. Morten Olsen’s players are eight points behind group leaders Sweden, five and three points adrift of Spain and Northern Ireland.
