| Hagi is back! |
Former Romanian top player Gheorghe Hagi returns as the head coach at Steaua Bucharest. Hagi comes after staying one year away from football. He was contacted by Steaua’s boss, Romanian multi millionaire Gigi Becali and couldn’t refuse the offer to return to the club that launched him on the worlds football scene.
Steaua Bucharest found themselves searching for a new coach as Cosmin Olaroiu their actual coach decided to leave the club an switch to Al Hali after an incredible offer. The Arabic club offered Olaroiu an incredible $ 1.700.000 yearly wage. After discussing the offer with his boss, Olaroiu was allowed to depart from Steaua.
Gigi Becali did not have to search to long for a new coach and one day later he managed to get Hagi’s approval to join the Ghencea based team. This was Hagi’s second chance to join with Steaua after he refused the job 2 years ago, out of no plausible reason. Bad voices said that he didn’t want to risk to get another black spot on his coach career. At that moment Steaua had some good results and the new coach should have dealt with a high pressure.
Gica Hagi’s coach career started at the Romanian national team, where he got sacked after only two matches after loosing the World Cup 2002 Qualifying face off against Slovenia. After that he coached Turkish club Bursaspor with no big results. It followed another Turkish club Galatasary where he managed to finish second in the league and won the Turkish Cup. Finaly the former Romanian national team captain worked at Poli Timisoara where he also lacked with positive results and failed to impress.
He joins Steaua in a positive moment. The 23 times Romanian League holders are qualified for the 2nd round Uefa Champions League qualifiers after finishing second in the 2006-2007 Romanian Liga 1 season. Under the second Cosmin Olaroiu reign, Steaua managed to achieve the 2006 Uefa Cup semifinals, the Uefa Champions League group stage ( Steaua being the only Romanian team that won this competition in 1986. ) and the Romanian Liga 1 title in the 2005-2006 season.
