Fabio Capello sacked by Real Madrid

Capello fired, who’s next?

It has happened, Real Madrid has sacked Fabio Capello, after only one season and after he just edged by the closest margin Barcelona and won Real Madrid’s 30th La Liga title. This was Capello’s second venture at the Santiago Bernabeu and also his second Primera Division title after winning the first one in the 1996-1997 season. The Italian coach has two more years left in his contract.

The announcement comes after Capello was on the edge off being kicked off a few months ago as Real was having a hard time both in the Liga and in the Champions League. It seems that his lucky title win couldn’t save the 61 year old Italian coach. The club’s decision was made public by Real Madrid’s sporting director:

“We have taken the decision not to continue with Fabio Capello next season.”

“It was a difficult decision, but it was a unanimous decision based on an exhaustive report I made to the board.

“We don’t think Fabio Capello is the right person to lead Real Madrid into the future given what we want this club to achieve.”

“Now we have time to think over who will be the next coach of the club.”

“I haven’t managed to talk it over with him personally because he is on holiday at the moment, but I did manage to speak to his son who is also his lawyer.”

Real Madrid seems to have taken the right decision from my point of view. Spanish clubs are hard to be coached by Italian trainers with mostly tacticised strategies. The La Liga pace is more dynamic, spectacular and a more opened type of play and it seems that this style won’t match with the Italian style. It is hard to force super players with an outstanding ball control to play to tactical and kill their creative side.

The Santiago Bernabeu located club has also some background on sacking successful coaches.
Jupp Heynackes was sacked in 1998 after he won the Champions League. Vincente Del Bosque was also fired after winning two La Liga titles and two Champions League titles during his reign.
