Wayne Rooney is the new Manchester United number 10
July 1, 2007

“When I was offered the chance to wear the number 10, I jumped at it.
“Some of the game’s greatest players have become legends wearing number 10, none more so than Denis Law.”
(Wayne Rooney)
Manchester United had to find another number 10 for the clubs jersey. And they did it in Wayne Rooney. The English striker will wear starting with the next season the new Reds number 10 shirt.
As we know the number 10 kit us usually worn at all major football clubs by the most representative player of the club. There are more criteria from where a number 10 is chosen. Usually this number represents an midfielder with excellent ball control. At the most clubs the play-makers wear the number 10 shirt. For example Ronaldinho at Barcelona or Robinho at Real Madrid.
When I think at the number 10 position of the team I think at the player that is responsible with the magic on the pitch and has the creativity and the knowledge to control the game of his team. After all this ideas , the question rises:
Is Rooney the best number 10 for Manchester United?
This issue is a bit delicate. From my point of view as a neutral observer I would answer Yes and No. Now let’s see why he is the right one for the shirt and why not.
YES
-> Because he is the most representative English player of the squad.
-> Rooney is always fighting he is pressing his opponents even in the last seconds of a game and this makes him an example to follow for his team mates.
-> He is young and has the opportunity to enter the Manchester United history books if he stays at the club for the years to come.
-> Rooney has a nice ball control compared to the other strikers in general.
NO
-> He is a striker and usually strikers don’t wear a number 10. It’s just like Nisterlooy would play number 10 for Real Madrid or Eto’o the same number for Barcelona. (although I have to add that Denis Law that also wore the number 20 for Manchester United in the 1960-70′ scored 237 times for the club)
-> From my point of view Rooney is more a number 9 as a number 10 profile
This decision could also mean that Wayne Rooney is set to stay for a long time with the Reds and this would be great because I like the players that are committed to their clubs even after they became superstars.
