Real Madrid where crowned 2007-08 La Liga Champions.

The 2007-08 La Liga season has just ended on Sunday. Real Madrid have been crowned again as Spanish Champions, defending their title won last year. Villarreal finished second and qualified directly for next season’s Champions League group stage. Barcelona had a disastrous finish and managed to grab only the third spot. The Catalan side have to play the Qualifiers in order to get the tickets for the Champions League group stage. The same have to do Atletico Madrid. They ranked 4th.

Sevilla and Racing Santander have qualified for the UEFA Cup from the 5th and 6th La Liga spots. Real Zaragoza, Murcia and Levante have relegated to the Segunda Division.

Let’s check some interesting facts and figures that characterized this La Liga season:
Real Madrid have scored the most goals during this Primera Division season, 84 where counted and have conceded the less number of goals, 36. The Champions gathered a record braking number of 85 points. Barcelona where the previous record holders. Since La Liga counts 20 teams and there are awarded 3 points for a win, Frank Rijkard’s squad counted 84 points in 2005.

Villarreal have played their best season in the Primera Division. They accumulated 77 points. This figure would have allowed them to be Champions in the last 4 season’s.

Daniel Guiza, Real Mallorca’s striker is the La Liga top scorer with 27 goals scored. He ranks second in the ‘Golden Boot’ standings with 54 points. The award was won by Cristiano Ronaldo with 62 points and 31 goals scored for Manchester United. Last years Primera Division top goalscorer was Ruud van Nistelrooy with 25 goals.

Iker Casillas is the best goalkeeper of the season with an average of 0.89 goals conceded per match.

Racing Santander’s 6th rank and UEFA Cup qualification sends the Spanish side to play in an European competition for the first time in their 95 years existence.

Real Zaragoza relegated to the Segunda Division, although they had their largest budget in history and the 7th from the La Liga, available for this season. Zaragoza also celebrated their 75th anniversary this season.

Recreativo Huelva where the squad with the most rejections and also the most yellow cards. They counted 12 sent-offs and 129 yellow cards.

The most rejections per player where received by: Ballesteros (Mallorca), Daniel Alves (FC Sevilla), Ocio (Bilbao), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid). Each of them got 3 red cards.

Sergio Ramos has received the most yellow cards: and impressive figure of 17.

5 Players have played in all of the 38th match-days of the season: Arango (Mallorca), Sorrentino (Huelva), Coloccini (La Coruna), Sergio Garcia (Zaragoza), Colsa (Santander).

Bojan Krkic was the youngest player of the league and also the youngest goalscorer. Barcelona’s youngster will turn 18 in August 2008.

Alberto from Real Valladolid was the oldest player that started a game this season. He is 38-years-old. The oldest goal scorer was Roberto Ayala from Valencia, aged 35.
