Fabio Cannavaro injured
Italy receive a massive blow as their 34-year-old captain was reported injured after Monday’s training session.

Fabio Cannavaro has suffered a tearing ankle ligaments injury, after he was tackled by Giorgio Chiellini. This stupid injury was registered in Italy’s first training session in Austria. Immediately after the tackle, Real Madrid’s central defender spent 20 minutes laid down on the pitch with Italy’s medical staff applying massive ice bags on the injured zone.

Everyone hoped just for a light ankle injury but in depth analysis showed that Fabio Cannavaro’s ankle ligaments where also affected. This means that the Italian defender will be out of the EURO 2008.

Italy will face Holland, Romania and France in the Group C of the EURO 2008. This might have been Cannavaro’s last chance of playing for Italy at a final tournament, at his 34 years of age. The World Champions staff has decided to maintain Cannavaro with the squad, even if he has no chance of playing during the tournament.

Roberto Donadoni called Fiorentina’s defender Alessandro Gamberini in order to cover the free spot in the squad, created by Cannavaro’s unfortunate injury. This premature exit from the EURO 2008 stage adds to those of the Dutch Ryan Babel, the Romanians Ovidiu Petre and Daniel Coman and also Patrick Vieira’s questionable presence for France’s squad.
