Look Back at the Champions League Final 2008

Since there are no games today, lets take a look back to the Champions League Final 2008, where Chelsea took on Manchester United in the Luzhniki Stadium, Russia, on 21st May 2008.

Opening Ceremony:

Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 26th minute, heading Browns cross past Petr Cech. Lampard had a simple task for the equaliser just before half time, with Essiens shot being deflected twice and falling into his path.

In the 2nd half Chelsea game close to scoring several times, including a 77th minute shot by Didier Drogba which crashed off the post, as well as a Lampard strike hitting the cross bar. Didier Drogba became the 2nd player to be sent off in a Champions League final after raising his hands to Vidic.

Aston Villa managed a great start to the UEFA Cup group stage with an important home win against Ajax Amsterdam. The Villans won with 2-1. Laursen headed the ball into the net after an 8th minute corner kick and opened the score. Vermaelen equalized with a similar procedure for Ajax. AC Milan obtained a walkover score in the 69th minute of their away match against Heerenveen. This match counted for the first match-day of the UEFA Cup. Portsmouth where humiliated in Portugal by Sporting Braga. Pompey registered a harsh 0-3 defeat that sends them at the bottom of the Group E table. The night started poorly for the English squad as Aguiar opened the score in the 8th minute.

Cuesta and Alan completed the disaster for Portsmouth in the second half and obtained a superb win for Braga. Check goals! [click to continue…]

AC Milan continue their unusual European performance this season, with a debut in the UEFA Cup group stage. At least now they should find at least something familiar, with the Champions League, although group configurations and fixtures are quite different in this competition. Milan are in a good shape at the moment and everyone expects magic from Ronaldinho.

Herenveen host the Rossoneri tonight in Netherlands. The Dutch side is in the good shape. They managed a moral boosting domestic win against Ajax 3 weeks ago. That match ended 5-2 for Herenveen.

The UEFA Cup group stage departs tonight, with the first match-day. Aston Villa and Ajax meet in the derby of the Group F. Both squads aim for one of the first qualification spots in this group. Villa come after a goalless draw in the weekend against Pompey while Ajax have only managed to defeat Gronigen with 1-0.
